Soccer fans pick Brazil
MORE than 20 percent of Chinese soccer fans polled by Shanghai Daily and TouchMedia think Brazil will win the World Cup.
The survey included nearly 470,000 people in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in mid June.
Argentina was second in the survey with 13 percent of soccer fans saying the team, led by midfielder Lionel Messi, will win the World Cup. Spain rounded out the top three with 11.6 percent believing they will become the next world champion.
All three teams have progressed to the quarterfinals, which start tonight with two games - the Netherlands versus Brazil, and Uruguay against Ghana. Germany faces Argentina and Spain plays Paraguay in the other quarterfinal matches tomorrow.
The tournament has become one of the most important things in people's lives. More than 60 percent of those surveyed said they would watch the games. Thirty-three percent agreed with the statement: "I will work in the daytime and watch the games every night even if it kills me."
Of those surveyed, 6.7 percent claimed they would quit their jobs so they could watch every game. Nearly 40 percent said they wanted to see rising stars while just under 30 percent said they wanted to watch the performances of famous players.
