Soldier beaten for taking photos of forced demolition

A soldier was beaten and handcuffed in southwest China's Yunnan Province as he tried to take photos of a forced demolition of a relative's house.

The soldier's 60-year-old mother was also handcuffed for more than 20 hours for protecting her son, Yunnan.cn, a local news website, reported yesterday.

The soldier posted on the Internet that he was on a leave last month and saw officials from the Longtan Township government and the Simao Prefecture People's Court were directing a forced demolition of a house owned by his relatives.

"The officials asked for my soldier certificate. I showed it to them but they said I was a fake soldier and grabbed my camera," the unnamed soldier said. He was later held in a local police station for more than three hours.

His mother was also cuffed as she was trying to stop the officials from beating her son. She was found by villagers the next day in a nearby mountain, according to the report.

Simao District government has conducted an investigation and promised to report its findings to the public.
