Some Shanghai factories cutting holes to meet rules
SOME children's furniture makers in Shanghai have been busily cutting holes in closets to meet the ventilation requirement set by the national standard that took effect yesterday.
The standards require that all closets have a hole to prevent suffocation in case children are locked inside. Two nine-year-old girls were suffocated in April after being locked inside a wardrobe while playing hide-and-seek.
But some products failing to meet the standard are still available at some big furniture stores in Shanghai. Some sellers are cutting rough holes to avoid punishment.
Furniture for children that fails the standard will be taken off shelves. Shen Weimin, deputy director of the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau, said yesterday that inspections based on the standard will start soon.
