Some big brand kids' wear poor in quality

CHILDREN'S clothes bearing the logos of Gucci, Zara, GAP, H&M, Giorgio Armani, Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Adidas and Nike were found with quality problems by authorities in several Chinese cities ahead of the June 1 Children's Day.

Problems ranged from poor dying, abnormal pH levels, cheating in fiber content, and formaldehyde pollution, according to quality supervision agencies, consumer associations, and market watchdogs.

Some brand owners said they had withdrawn flawed products from shelves. H&M recalled one batch of baby's knitwear from shops nationwide after complaints about its fading color. Customers can return it for refund, said Amy Fu, a public relations officer for H&M Shanghai.

A GAP product was also found to have a problem with dying by the China Consumers Association which tested 50 samples of clothes for kids under 3 years old. Doctors said pigment from poorly dyed fabric can irritate a child's skin while abnormal pH levels can cause skin allergy and infection because kids have a tender skin.

Meanwhile, a batch of Hello Kitty overalls was tested to contain less fiber than shown on its label. The association said 28 out of the 50 samples it tested failed the quality standards. It also advised parents to buy clothes with simple designs with fewer buttons and drawstrings.
