Some cheat to get low-income housing

FAMILIES living in high-end apartments or already enjoying a subsidized home were found among those who passed the final round of assessment of qualification for low-income housing in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

Shenzhen Bureau of Housing and Construction published a list of 5,293 households who passed the final round of assessment. If no objection is filed within 15 days ending January 14, they will be able to rent or buy low-income apartments, China Securities Journal reported today.

However, people found that 17 of the listed families are living in an upscale residential complex with property price of more than 24,000 yuan (US$3,635) per square meter, leading to an online outcry over the selection's fairness.

Some applicants were found already enjoying a government-subsidized house, thus unqualified for applying again because Shenzhen's housing authority ruled that each household can apply to rent or buy only one low-income house.

The housing authority has already eliminated 2,855 applicants in the previous two rounds of assessment, the report said.
