Some find new sex education textbook too explicit
A sex education textbook with explicit description of sexual intercourse and vivid illustrations will be distributed in Beijing's primary schools, ruffling the feathers of some parents.
The new textbook broke the traditional taboo and included the terms of many sexual organs for the first time. In a chapter called "Where do I come from," it details the process of intercourse and explains how sperms meet the egg. Cartoon pictures on each page help explain the terms, the Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Sex education has been absent in China's primary and middle schools for a long time. The new textbook was hailed as a combination of Western sex education and traditional Chinese culture and a good guide for both students and their parents, Zhang Meimei, director of the sex education research center in Beijing's Capital Normal University, told the newspaper.
However, some parents considered the textbook too explicit and straightforward, which might backfire and even cause early puberty, a parent surnamed Chen told the reporter.
The textbook will be used in selected schools on a trial basis before being introduced to all primary schools in the capital city.
