Someone in Zhejiang becomes China's biggest lotto winner

A record jackpot of 514 million yuan (US$79.8 million) was announced yesterday, making the lucky ticket holder China's biggest lottery winner in history.

China Welfare Lottery officials said the Union Lotto, also known as "two-color ball," hit the same winning number twice and they traced the two winning tickets to a lottery booth in Shaoxing, a city in eastern Zhejiang Province.

It was very likely that the two tickets were bought by one person, who will surpass a man in central Henan Province who scooped 359.9 million yuan in lottery win last year.

Ticket holders need to pick a total of seven numbers from two separate pools of balls: six different numbers (red balls) from 1 to 33, and one number (blue ball) from 1 to 16. The top prize goes to the ticket that matches all seven numbers drawn. The jackpot keeps growing if there is no winner.

The draw is held every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and each ticket costs two yuan.
