Song hunters cross deserts to rescue tunes
A JOINT team with experts from both China and Mongolia have "rescued" more than 500 "long-tune" Mongolian folk songs in a two-year field survey that concluded recently, the cultural department of northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region said yesterday.
The survey was based on an agreement made between the two countries in 2007 to protect the unique songs.
A team of 10 interviewed 420 local singers of folk songs, recorded videos and "saved" 266 songs on the verge of extinction. They traveled 12,000 kilometers across Inner Mongolia and 6,250km in the Republic of Mongolia.
