South China to reel under heat wave, crops damaged
A heat wave will continue to scorch south China over the next three days with temperatures rising over 35 degrees Celsius, the National Meteorological Center predicted yesterday.
Parts of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces will see temperatures climb to 40 to 41 degrees Celsius.
Continuous heat waves have lingered in east provinces of Zhejiang and Anhui, affecting crops and causing significant economic losses.
More than 77,000 hectares of farmland in Zhejiang’s capital of Hangzhou have been damaged, causing economic losses totaling 646 million yuan (US$105.6 million).
In neighboring Anhui, over 693,000 hectares of farmland have been affected. The drought has affected 2.98 million local residents and left 119,000 people short of drinking water, as well as direct economic losses of 1 billion yuan.
A lingering drought in Hunan Province triggered an invasion of locusts in mid-July, damaging over 20,000 hectares of bamboo forest.
