Southern nightspots allowed to reopen
ALMOST 70 percent of the entertainment venues closed by police in Dongguan, south China’s Guangdong Province, in a crackdown on prostitution have been allowed to reopen, authorities said yesterday.
The venues include 631 foot massage parlors, 465 karaoke bars and 38 saunas.
Police met with the owners of 2,684 venues on Tuesday to update them on the campaign, asking them to sign a statement to clarify who should take responsibility in the case of illegal management, said Dongguan public security official Li Dehe.
Since the start of the campaign in February, police have punished 1,552 people involved in illegal acts. A total of 26 venue owners and 51 managers have also been arrested, Li said.
In response to accusations of an easing of the crackdown, he said: “Police will never allow rampant illegal acts to recur.”
