Southern rainstorms death toll up to 37

AT least 37 people have died and six remain missing after downpours hit provinces in south China, according to a statement from the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction yesterday.
In south China’s Guangdong Province, the death toll from floods had risen to 17 by midday yesterday, with three people missing.
The rainstorms also hit Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi and five other southern provinces, leading to fatalities.
Hunan reported seven deaths, with three people missing, while four died in Guizhou, said the statement.
A total of 5.51 million people are affected and 447,000 displaced due to the collapse of 25,000 houses.
Continuous downpours have led to serious runoff from mountainous areas and raised the water level of rivers. Farms have been submerged beneath floodwater, said the statement.
Some 264,800 hectares of crops have been destroyed by the floods and related factors, said the statement This has led to total direct economic losses estimated at 7.35 billion yuan (US$1.18 billion).
The Chinese government announced a grade IV emergency response yesterday morning to relieve the regions affected.
