Space institute's spending queried

A SPACE science institute's purchasing contracts have come under scrutiny after it emerged it paid 10 times the official price for memory cards.

Details of the Beijing-based Institute of Space Science and Applied Research's purchases earlier this month were published online this week.

Figures showed that the institute, which comes under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, paid 6,247 yuan (US$978) each for Hewlett-Packard 128M memory cards.

An HP agent told the Nanfang Daily that the company's most expensive memory card costs no more than 600 yuan.

Web users said the product can be bought for between 100 and 300 yuan online and expressed concern that government money was misused.

A business manager, surnamed Wang, with the Beijing Huajiang Science Corporation, which provided contract items, the memory card was a genuine HP product examined by an experienced professional, leading to the high price.

An institute employee yesterday said the purchase had followed all legal procedures, but didn't comment on the high price of the cards.
