Spirulina products recalled for lead hazard

THE State Food and Drug Administration has ordered a recall of certain brands of dietary supplement made of spirulina as they were found to contain excessive levels of lead.

An investigative report by a Xinhua News Agency journalist revealed that excessive amount of lead was detected in six of the eight brands on the market. Conthealthy, a US brand, exceeded the acceptable limit by 820 percent.

The media exposure has raised public concern about officials' lax supervision and corruption, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The report showed that the producers didn't follow the GMP (good manufacturing practice) guideline and used inferior spirulina powder as the raw material. They didn't test the products before supplying them to the market.

Some agencies also helped the manufacturers obtain official permits for their unqualified products. They even fabricated samples and bribed drug inspectors, the report said.

Tong Min, a State Food and Drug Administration official, said these agencies will be blacklisted.

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals.
