Spray helicopter crashes in Beijing, killing 1 pilot
A helicopter pilot died when his pesticide-spraying helicopter crashed and burned in a mountainous area in Beijing yesterday, the Beijing News reported today.
Initial investigation showed the helicopter might have hit a cable TV line when it was spraying pesticide over farmland at the foot of a mountain near Tiekuangyu Village in the city's Huairou District, local police said.
The fallen helicopter exploded and burned in flames shortly after police dispersed the crowd gathering to see what had happened.
The 48-year-old pilot Gong Luning died in the crash. Witnesses said the lower part of his body was burnt.
The helicopter belonged to Hubei Tongcheng General Aviation Co and was leased to Beijing Forest Protection Station to spray pesticide, police said.
It was the company's second helicopter to crash this year. On May 16, another pesticide-spraying helicopter plunged when its pilot tried to avoid electric wires.
