Spurned love takes fatal turn

COURTING turned tragic yesterday in southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality as a young man's one-sided love prompted him to abduct his sweetheart and stab her mother before he was shot dead by police.
The man, surnamed Zuo, and the abducted Jiang, both 21, attended the same school.
Zuo was infatuated by Jiang but Jiang's mother was fiercely opposed to Zuo's courting her daughter, according to the China News Service.
Zuo went to Jiang's home armed with a knife about 8am yesterday and stabbed the mother several times.
He then abducted Jiang and fled to the Qingcaopo area of the city where he held her at knifepoint.
City police said they tried for more than two hours to persuade Zuo to release her.
He was shot dead after negotiations failed about 11:30am, Xinhua news agency reported.
Jiang was injured and traumatized and her mother's life is still in danger from her wounds. Both are being treated in hospital.
