Spurned mistress poisons lover in Sprite hoax
A MAN in Beijing has been arrested for damaging Coca-Cola's reputation by claiming to be poisoned by mercury from a Sprite drink – to hide a revenge murder plot by his lover.
The lover and her partner in the poisoning plot, a security guard, were also arrested for failed homicide, today's Beijing Times reported.
Ma Sai, 21, claimed to be poisoned when dining with his mistress and colleague Liu Xiaojing, 28, at a hot-pot restaurant in Beijing last November.
But Liu had decided to kill him because she learned that Ma was unfaithful to her, she told police. Security guard Gao Xingyuan taught her how to put mercury into Ma's food and drink to kill him.
But they failed twice to poison him because Ma noticed his food tasted odd and didn't eat it.
Before the third attempt at the restaurant, Liu bought 10 barometers, broke them and drained out the mercury. She then poured the toxin into a can of Sprite drink.
Ma drank up and vomited large quantities of mercury balls. He was sent to hospital where Liu confessed her plot, the report said.
Ma said he didn't tell police the truth because he did not want to incriminate Liu. The poisoning case was thus blamed on Coca-Cola.
But police investigation later cleared Coca-Cola from the accusation and Ma and Liu confessed the truth.
