Girl, 10, badly injured while trying to open homemade grape drinks bottle
A 10-year-old girl in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, was severely injured by spurting gas when she opened a bottle of homemade grape drinks with her teeth last Monday, local media reported.
The girl hurt her lungs and esophagus after she used her teeth to open the bottle.
The girl's grandmother had added sugar into some grapes and kept them inside a bottle hoping to brew a summer cold drink for the girl.
The girl is now at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University and doctors said it would be difficult for them to complete the surgeries given the complexity of her situation.
Gas is produced when sugar is turned into alcohol during the process of grape brewing. If the power generated by the gas inside air-tight containers exceeds the capacity of the container, it can lead to explosions, experts warned.
Containers with poor quality or improper brewing operation increase the risks of explosion.
