Stabbing attacks rattle residents in Hebei county

A rumor circulated recently in a county in northern Hebei Province that a physco killer had stabbed several young women, most of them dressed in red. The macabre tale struck fear into the hearts of many locals.
Several netizens claimed the serial killer was targeting at women aged around 25 and dressed in red and already caused three deaths in Guantao County, Hebei Youth Daily reported yesterday.
To ease public fears, a local deputy police chief made a television speech on March 30 to talk about the case in detail and dispel the rumor.
Some women were hurt and no one died in the seven attacks that happened in Guantao County and the neighboring Guanxian County in Shandong Province. Police believed all the attacks were committed by the same person and they are still searching for the suspect, said Bai Qingling, deputy police chief in Guantao County.
One victim, a 21-year-old woman surnamed Jiao, was stabbed in the chest on March 28. Jiao wore a black coat when she was attacked. She is still hospitalized, Bai said.
