Stabbing suspect 'drunk' during attacks: Police
THE man who allegedly stabbed two people to death last night in downtown Beijing was confirmed to be drunk at the time of the attacks, local police said today.
The attacks – which injured 14 people and killed two security guards - occurred about 6:54pm yesterday in Dashilan area. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital and two security guards died later despite medical treatment, police sources said. The 14 injured are in a stable condition, the sources added.
The suspect, named Zhang Jianfei, 46, was captured at the scene by police on patrol. He comes from Jilin in northeastern Jilin province.
Police sources said Zhang was known for drunken fights in his hometown.
After the incident, the municipal government has dispatched armed police to patrol in major downtown areas.
Further investigation is still under way.
