Stampede kills 2 at promotion

TWO people were crushed to death and 11 injured during a stampede at a promotion arranged by an electronics company in southwest China's Chongqing City yesterday morning.

One of the dead was identified as a 67-year-old woman from the city's Fuling District. Two of the 11 injured people were still in critical condition, according to a Chinese news report.

The Liaofeng Electronics Co Ltd was giving away gifts while promoting herbal medicine products in a conference room it had rented. The stampede occurred about 9:15am when the crowd gathered turned violent, the news report said.

The injured were being treated at the district's medical center.

The incident is reminiscent of a stampede during a promotion at a Carrefour store in Chongqing that left three people dead and 31 injured on November 10, 2007. The store was staging the promotion to mark its 10th anniversary.

Duan Chengwei, a worker in the damage-prevention department was sentenced to three years in prison for blocking an entrance with a desk.
