Star Tse set to divorce over 'threats to children'
HONG Kong singer-actor Nicholas Tse has prepared documents to divorce his actress wife Cecilia Cheung next Monday, it is claimed.
Tse is taking this action after being appalled when Cheung twice made threats about their children's safety during problems in their relationship, Hong Kong media cited unnamed sources as saying yesterday.
Tse, who is shooting an action movie in Malaysia, has spoken with lawyers and will fly to Hong Kong to sign the divorce papers on Monday.
By then, Cheung will have completed shooting in Shenzhen City, in south China's Guangdong Province, for a romantic movie, reported Hong Kong-based entertainment magazine Sudden Weekly yesterday.
An insider, who claimed to be a close friend of Tse, said he decided to end the turbulent five-year marriage after Cheung made threats about the safety of their sons.
According to the insider, after Tse refused to give his wife 40 million yuan (US$6.17 million) to invest in real estate, Cheung send short messages to Tse, saying she would disappear with their two sons and that Tse was "sure to regret it."
And in 2008, Cheung said she would jump from a building with their elder son Lucas if Tse didn't forgive her after she was caught in an explicit photograph scandal with Hong Kong singer-actor Edison Chen, the magazine said.
Relations between the couple had been frosty after the scandal, but Cheung sought to reconcile with her husband by making a surprise visit with Lucas to Tse's hotel while he was shooting a film in Thailand.
When Tse opened the door, Cheung knelt down, weeping and begging for Tse to forgive her. When Tse hesitated, she took Lucas to the balcony and said she would jump off, the magazine said.
This tallies with claims by Eileen Cha, a Hong Kong radio host who first revealed the couple's disputes.
Cha said Tse was forced to agree to whatever Cheung demanded as she would become very upset.
Cha said Tse transferred a large part of his properties to Cheung, but she still demanded a US$1 million villa Tse bought for his father and company shares.
On Thursday, Cheung's agent said the actress was unavailable for any interviews.
The agent posted a picture of a smiling Cheung dancing with a Korean actor in Shenzhen.
But many netizens commented that Cheung's smile was "stiff and embarrassed."
