'Star Wars' blasts box office competition

"STAR Wars: The Force Awakens," ruled the box office in the week ending Jan. 10, earning 344.3 million yuan (US$52.3 million) after opening on Jan. 9.

Domestic thriller "Detective Chinatown" was a respectable No. 2 in the week, pulling in 207.9 million yuan, China Film News reported on Sunday. The film opened on Dec. 31.

"Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" came in third, earning 134.4 million yuan after opening on Jan. 4.

Fourth place went to "Mr. Six," a domestic action-thriller that took 128.5 million yuan in the week. The film, which stars famed director Feng Xiaogang, was released on Dec. 24.

Rounding out the top five was "Mojin: The Lost Legend," a domestic action-fantasy, with 82.7 million yuan. It opened on Dec. 18.
