Star pair said to be in dispute over sons

HONG Kong singer-actor Nicholas Tse made a short public appearance at a hotel in Malaysia yesterday, seemingly unaffected by rumors that he is embroiled in a custody battle with his actress wife Cecilia Cheung over their two sons.

Wearing sunglasses and surrounded by six bodyguards, Tse didn't say anything but merely smiled and waved to photographers and reporters who bombarded him with questions about recent revelations that his marriage was on the rocks.

He was soon on his way from the hotel in Kuala Lumpur to the site of his latest action thriller "Against War," according to the website of Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily.

Cheung, who is shooting a film in Shenzhen City in south China's Guangdong Province, hasn't appeared in public since radio host Eileen Cha's claims on Monday that the couple were maintaining the pretence of a happy marriage for the sake of their families.

Rumors are now circulating that the couple are in dispute over the custody of their two sons - one-year-old Quintus and his brother Lucas, who is approaching four years old.

An unnamed source said the couple had signed an agreement before marriage that Cheung would maintain parental rights in the event of a separation.

The source said Tse signed because he didn't want to see the brothers separated. But now the agreement was in dispute.

Another insider noted that Cheung tended to raise Lucas alone, while Tse liked to look after Quintus.

Cheung suspended her film career to have more time with Lucas after he was born. When she returned to the industry, the toddler was almost always with her, impressing her fans with her devotion to him.

On the other hand, Quintus has been taken care of by Tse's mother since he was born.

While Tse was making no comment yesterday, his agent, Mani Fok, said the actor was in high spirits and focused on his work.

But the website quoted an unnamed source as saying Tse was not as cool as he had appeared to be.

The source said Tse locked himself in his hotel room all day when he wasn't working and was so angry on set he disregarded his own safety by refusing to use a stand-in when his character jumped from an eight-story building.
