Star’s stock is high with market
SOARING shares in China’s stock market are all down to a pop diva’s love life, at least according to some web users.
Tongue-in-cheek, they point out that the two longest bull markets in China’s stock market coincided with the marriages of singer and actress Faye Wong.
So when the Shanghai Composite Index surpassed 3,000 for the first time in three and a half years yesterday and the daily trading volume market surpassed 1 trillion yuan (US$162.6 billion) for the first time in history last Friday, naturally this was due to the 45-year-old’s latest romance, they claimed.
Financial experts attributed this to an interest rate cut and investor optimism. But Wong analysts were having none of it, instead insisting the record was because the star may soon be tying the knot for a third time.
They pointed out that after Wong married her first husband Dou Wei, a Chinese musician, in July 1996, the Shanghai Composite Index increased from 753 to 2,245 in the following 17 months.
And when she married Chinese actor Li Yapeng in July 2005, the index rose from 998 to the historical high of 6,124 in the next two years.
When they divorced last year, web users joked that China’s stock market may see another boom if she married again.
When it was reported in September that Wong was dating Hong Kong singer and actor Nicholas Tse, with whom she broke up 11 years ago, expectation grew higher.
And actually, the index has risen from 2,300 to 3,020 over the past three months.
“The couple dating brought a 25 percent growth. What will happen if they get married? Will the Shanghai Composite Index rise to 8,000,” joked one Weibo microblog account holder.
“Dear Faye Wong, for the happiness of shareholders, please marry Nicholas Tse,” added another web user.
