State Council on weibo

THE newsletter of the State Council, China's Cabinet, opened an account on China's Twitter-like service Sina weibo yesterday, joining thousands of government administrations already engaging with the public through social media.

The weibo account will be used to publish the country's major policies and guidelines in a timely and accurate manner, according to an advance notice published on the weibo on Friday.

Its first weibo messages released yesterday were government decrees and regulations on waterway management, automobile recalls, education, and food, as well as a reshuffle of government officials.

By 10am yesterday, the account had 190,000 followers.

Many Chinese government administrations and agencies have turned to microblogs to offer information, answer queries, address complaints and sometimes respond to rumors.

China has around 500 million Internet users. Sina weibo, is used by more than 300 million Chinese.
