State firm's ex-head gets death in corruption case
A SENIOR official of a state-owned food enterprise was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in a case involving bribes and embezzlement of state-owned assets totaling more than 370 million yuan (US$58.65 million), the Intermediate Court of Wenzhou in eastern Zhejiang Province said yesterday.
Ying Guoquan, 58, former chairman of the Wenzhou Vegetable Basket Group, was deprived of his political rights for life, and his personal assets were confiscated.
He and other 15 former senior officials, who received jail terms ranging from three years with a three-year reprieve to 13 years, were convicted of directly siphoning more than 216 million yuan from state assets between 2003 and 2010.
The court also ordered them to return all of the ill-gotten money and goods.
Reading of the verdict lasted 90 minutes, as the case involved the largest food-supply company in Zhejiang Province and is considered one of the most serious corruption cases of its kind in the province.
Nearly 400 people, including chairmen of 50 state-owned companies, government officials and law professionals, were present for the verdict, China News Service reported.
From 1998 to 2007, Ying made false reports on the number of workers employed, swindling a total of 115.8 million yuan in salary from government departments, most of which was distributed to the convicted officials.
The man bribed government officials to turn a state-owned group turned into a limited liability company, with 80 percent of the company's shares transferred to Ying.
