Steep rise in organ donations
THE number of donated human organs is likely to hit 10,000 this year, more than five times the usual figure due to increased transparency in the system.
Huang Jiefu, director of the China Organ Donation Committee, said that as of Tuesday, 1,200 organs had been donated by 381 people this year, the Beijing News reported yesterday.
The committee expects the total to top 10,000 by the end of the year, up from about 1,700 in 2014, Huang said.
“China’s organ donation businesses have been operating in a grey area for many years. People didn’t know how to make a donation and there was no national donation system,” he said.
“But the recent data show that people are willing to make a donation if the system is transparent,” he said.
About 22,000 people are currently on a national waiting list for organ transplants, the report said.
Huang quoted a survey carried out last year by China Youth Daily saying that most people who refuse to be organ donors do so because they don’t trust the system.
People have traditionally been concerned about having their organs “pooled” with ones from executed prisoners, according to the survey of 43,000 people.
Since this year, however, the harvesting of organs from executed prisoners has been illegal. All organs used for transplant must come either from a living relative or a registered donor.
