Stepfather detained after child drowns in washer
A MAN in Chongqing City has been detained for allegedly drowning his two-year-old stepdaughter in a washing machine to collect life insurance payouts.
Wang Bin had debts of 40,000 yuan (US$ 6,346) at the time the child died, according to the Chongqing Economic Times.
He is said to have borrowed 2,500 yuan to buy life insurance policies for the girl on January 6.
Wang taught the girl how to do the laundry, then, a day after policies took effect, pushed her into the machine, the newspaper said yesterday.
Wang left the child struggling for her life while he joined his one-year-old son and unsuspecting wife Chen Hong.
After 20 minutes, Wang returned and raised the alarm. The child had already drowned, reported the newspaper.
Wang called police and asked them to issue a sudden death certificate so he could claim on the life insurance.
However, police were suspicious and investigated.
Hours later, Wang confessed, the newspaper reported.
