Stepmother, 21, arrested for child abuse

A 21-year-old stepmother accused of beating and poisoning a 2-year-old boy has been arrested, the Guangzhou Daily reported today.

The boy, identified as Xiao Han, has remained in a coma since December 27 when he was admitted into a hospital in Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province, the paper said.

Doctors said the toddler from Chongqing in western China suffered thigh fractures, intracranial hemorrhage as well as damages to his heart and lungs.

The boy's stepmother surnamed Tian said the child was naughty and he hurt himself while playing toys. The boy's biological mother A'ling alerted the police on New Year's Day and Tian was taken into custody.

Police said Tian admitted beating the boy and she was officially arrested for child abuse.

Hospital examination showed the toddler suffered brain disorder which might be caused by poison.

A'ling said Tian fed the boy pigeon soup with red dates and Glehnia littoralis, a medicinal herb, to make it more nutritious as she claimed.

Police are still investigating the case.
