Stolen twin girls reunited with their parents
The twin baby girls stolen and sold by the obstetrician who delivered them have been reunited with their parents.
The parents saw their daughters for the first time on Saturday after they were born in May in Fuping County, Shaanxi Province.
The twins were returned to their parents after a DNA report was completed.
Zhang Shuxia, the obstetrician, convinced the mother to give the babies up by falsely claiming they had “deadly congenital diseases” and has been detained by police, Beijing Times reported.
According to Qi Kunfeng, father of the twins, his wife was in labor when Zhang approached his mother, surnamed Yang, and claimed the babies shared one placenta and funicle and would not live longer than two or three years.
Zhang also told the family the position of the babies in the uterus would cause a huge risk during delivery and asked whether Yang wanted to ensure the safety of the mother or the twins, the report said. The family decided to prioritize the mother.
The mother told the newspaper she heard the babies crying and could see their heads during delivery. She was then told to sign a medical record, which showed she consented to giving up medical treatment of her babies.
Zhang even charged a 100 yuan (US$16.20) “formality fee” while declining the family’s requests to see the babies, the report said. She is a veteran of the Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital and was due to retire in September.
Police have received 26 cases of missing babies allegedly involving Zhang. In two verified cases, Zhang earned 30,000 yuan by selling one baby and 21,600 yuan from another, the report said.
The grandmother of the twins went to school with Zhang and had remained friends, the newspaper said.
The twins’ mother burst into tears when she saw her daughters in the hospital for the first time, 73 days after they were born. The father said they don’t want to tell the girls about the incident when they grow up.
“It’s my fault. I failed to protect them,” he told the newspaper.
According to the hospital, the twin girls were in good health and were allowed to go home with their parents.
Five officials have been sacked in Fuping, including the director of the county’s health department and the head of the hospital where the twins were born, according to a Xinhua news agency report.
