Stone-throwing children arrested for traffic accidents in Sichuan
POLICE have arrested three minors suspected of throwing rocks at passing cars on an expressway near Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan, causing several traffic accidents which resulted in one death and many more injuries, the Chengdu Business Daily reported.
From late March to mid-April, drivers on the expressway reported flying rocks hitting their cars as they were driving down the Jinyinhu section. A witness, surnamed Mei, reported a rock striking the right side of his windshield while he was travelling down the expressway in his SUV. Upon pulling over, Mei said he discovered 13-14 more vehicles had stopped with similar damage to their sunroofs and windshields. Some drivers had even suffered injuries to their head and arms.
One driver said he saw a boy throwing rocks near the highway guardrail, according to reports.
After discussing the incident with the other drivers, Mei informed the police. However, because Mei and the others were anxious to return to their homes, they did not wait for authorities to arrive. Mei said he will have to pay thousands to repair the damage to his car, but felt lucky to have avoided more serious injuries.
While Mei was lucky to avoid serious injury, 3 passengers were injured when another stone hit the windshield of a red sedan. While 2 of the injured passengers were released from the hospital with minor injuries, another passenger sitting behind the driver was struck in the abdomen by the rock, and died the next day in Renshou County Hospital.
Renshou County Police confirmed on April 17th that three other cars were involved in similar accidents on the same section of the highway, and three minors were arrested, according to reports.
Police say it is unclear how many cars were damaged since so many left the scene before police arrived.
The accidents are still under investigation.
