Storm pounds Guilin, road traffic suspended

RAINSTORM pounded Guilin, southwest China's tourist city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region today, prompting authorities to suspend road traffic and issue storm warnings.

Heavy rain started to fall in Guilin and surrounding area this morning. Rainfall reached 70mm by 11am and is expected to surge further to 100mm by 2pm, local weather forecast bureau said.

Cave-ins were reported at a section of an inter-provincial road, forcing authorities to order traffic suspension. Work crews have been sent to prevent cave-ins from occurring along the road.

There is no immediate report of casualties.

Guilin, with its unique picturesque landscapes, is a prime tourist destination in and out of China. It holds two sites enlisted to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
