Storm set to head south
GOVERNMENT monitoring yesterday indicated the sandstorm that has plagued much of northern China is likely to reach the Yangtze River basin and possibly areas further south.
The sandstorm is moving to Henan and Shandong provinces and increasingly strong winds could blow it south of the Yangtze River basin, said the Center for Desertification Monitoring in the State Administration of Forestry.
In the 35 hours up to 11am yesterday, 270 million people in an area of 1.8 million square kilometers had been affected by the sandstorm.
It has hampered traffic in affected regions and is also expected to have a longer term impact on agricultural production.
