Storms bring death and destruction
SIX people died and two others were injured in central China’s Henan Province yesterday when a minibus was hit by part of a collapsed aqueduct. The accident in Linzhou was triggered by rainstorms that had lashed the city from Monday night to early yesterday, authorities said.
Heavy rain also took its toll in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where one person died and another is missing.
Seven of the region’s cities, including the capital Nanning, and 17 counties reported heavy downpours, according to the regional civil affairs bureau.
The fatality was the result of a building collapse while the person missing was swept away by a flood, the bureau said.
Liuzhou reported serious flooding in its downtown area. Roads were impassable, cars submerged, public transport suspended, and trains delayed. Railway authorities had to use boats to ferry train drivers to the station.
As of yesterday afternoon, 612 people had been relocated, 153 houses destroyed and 5,850 hectares of crops ruined.
The National Meteorological Center issued a nationwide alert, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rain across most parts of the country.
