Story of girl, grandma spurs help
TOUCHED by media reports, people are stepping forward to help a 10-year-old girl living in a Zhejiang Province village with her 81-year-old foster grandmother as their living condition deteriorates.
Thanks to the growing help from local communities and from elsewhere in the country, the deeply poor family of two is receiving hope for a better life, including the prospect of no longer living in a house on the verge of collapse.
The public, including the girl's schoolmates, townsmen, local residents and some companies, helped after a local newspaper reported the family's challenging situation.
The grandmother, Shi Xiangqiu, picked up some trivial work in an effort to earn money to support the family.
The little girl, Lu Limei, tried her best to help with domestic work while struggling to study hard. She walked 3 kilometers each day by herself to school to save transport costs.
Lu was picked up from the street as an abandoned baby in the village of Yuefeng, within the city of Dongyang, by a couple who successfully petitioned to become her foster parents. Despite being poor, the family provided the best they could afford to the child. But Lu's foster parents died in 2009 and 2010 because of diseases.
Teachers said despite all the challenges, the girl performed with above-average scores in school. The school canceled her lunch fees before a local newspaper recently reported her story.
A construction company will soon replace the family's house with a new one that will be safe. Local volunteers are also helping take care of the senior and girl.
The volunteers have also raised money to buy the girl a bike, which she calls her biggest dream that will make it easier to go to school.
