Stowaways captured by police
MORE than 2,000 stowaways have been captured by police in south China’s Guangdong Province this year, 47 percent more than the same period last year.
Police also handled more than 120 illegal immigration cases in collaboration with counterparts in neighboring regions, an increase of 20 percent, according to Jiang Mingxiang of the province’s border force.
“Over 1,800 of the stowaways were foreigners, mostly from Southeast Asian countries,” Jiang said.
In one case, Guangdong and Guangxi police busted a trafficking gang, capturing eight brokers, two factory managers and over 80 stowaways.
Jiang said: “Border areas between Southeast Asian countries and China’s Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan lack natural barriers to fend off illegal immigrants.”
