Stranded travelers on their way home

MOST of the 50,000 holiday travelers stranded by bad weather in and around Guangzhou Railway Station in south China are now on their way home.

Fifty-five trains left the station between midnight on Tuesday and 8am yesterday, the Guangzhou Railway Group said. A small number of passengers had opted for refunds instead, it said.

Meanwhile, railway authorities in the city added eight high-speed trains to help people get away ahead of next week’s Chinese New Year holiday celebrations. Each of the trains can carry about 1,100 passengers.

The high-speed trains will also run today, a spokesman for the railway company said.

Railway authorities have also arranged four short-distance trains to be in operation from today to Saturday to transport passengers from Guangzhou Railway Station to the new southern station from where all the high-speed trains depart.

With an improvement in the weather, most trains were running on time yesterday.

Only a handful were delayed for more than an hour, compared with the 27 reported on Tuesday, the spokesman said.

As a result, the railway station was less crowded yesterday, with around 33,000 passengers in and around the station at 11am, down from the 50,000 at the same time on Tuesday.

The average waiting time for check-in was about an hour, compared with more than three hours at the start of the week.

Snow that hit central, eastern and southern China since Sunday disrupted the busiest travel time of the year. But railway authorities predicted traffic would return to normal in the next two days as the weather improves and the pre-holiday rush ends.
