Strangers attack lawyer on case involving police chief

BEIJING police are investigating an attack by more than 10 unidentified men on the lawyer who represents the family of a college student killed by a hit-and-run driver whose father was a ranking police officer.

The lawyer, Zhang Kai, said he was driving his friend home when they were blocked by a SUV and two cars on a road in the capital's Haidian District at 10:40pm on Tuesday, the Beijing News reported today.

Zhang said he quickly locked the car doors before the group of strangers tried to pull them open. The attackers then kicked and punched his car and shouted "Get out." One of them returned to the SUV and took out a mental rod ready to smash the windows. Zhang stepped on the gas and fled unscathed, the report said.

Zhang told the Beijing News he made several turns to get rid of the pursuing attackers. Eventually he parked his car near a police vehicle and called for help.
Beijing police said they will track the offenders via foot and finger prints on Zhang's Volkswagen Bora. The car has a damaged front bumper, several dents and scratches.

Zhang said all the three cars of his attackers didn't have a license plate and were not captured by surveillance cameras. The attackers were all young men in casual clothes. Zhang said he could not confirm whether the assault had any connection with the hit-and-run lawsuit he was handling for the family of Chen Xiaofeng, who was killed on Hebei University campus on October 16 by the son of Li Gang, deputy police chief in Beishi District of Baoding, Hebei Province.

The driver's claim "Sue me if you dare. My father is Li Gang!" has enraged the public and became a catch line on the Internet. He was arrested on October 24.
