Stray hikers told to pay for rescue operation

The Sichuan Mountain Climbing Association asked the 14 hikers who went missing for 13 days and returned to safety yesterday to pay 30,000 yuan (US$4,700) for the rescue operation.

Gao Min, deputy secretary of the association, said the 30,000 yuan included 26,000 yuan for the Siguniang Mountain Administration and 4,000 for the association.

"Actually, the 30,000 yuan is only part of the total expense for hiring local guides, horses and other means of transportation. Costs incurred to the local government have been omitted," Gao said.

The hikers and their families said they would pay reasonable fees for the rescue, but the mountain climbing association had to provide a detailed list of the rescuers, their contacts and relevant documents.

The 14 hikers went into the forbidden area of the Siguniang Mountain during the National Day holiday and got lost for almost two weeks. They managed to walk out to safety yesterday and all appeared in good condition.
