Striking teachers’ pay claim ‘reasonable’
AUTHORITIES in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province have described teachers’ demands for a pay increase as “reasonable” after a strike in Zhaodong spread to other areas under their jurisdiction.
In Shuangcheng, teachers left their classrooms for four days from November 24.
Teachers also took action in the city of Shangzhi and Yilan, Bingxian and Bayan counties.
One Shuangcheng teacher with 25 years’ service said his salary was just 2,500 yuan (US$406.97) a month, China National Radio reported.
CNR said the first strike began on November 17 when nearly 8,000 primary and middle school teachers in Zhaodong left their classrooms.
The striking teachers gathered outside the city government building, posting banners and demanding higher pay.
The strike ended on November 20 after the city government agreed to raise salaries from January.
The final settlement has not been made public but one teacher told CNR the increase would be around 600 to 700 yuan a month.
“We are satisfied about the increase and thus we returned to classrooms,” the teacher said, adding that teachers would use their weekends to make sure that their pupils catch up with their studies and don’t fall behind.
