String slit throat of a speedboat rider
A young woman is in critical condition after her bronchia was slit by a string attached to a water walking ball as she was riding a speedboat near a beach in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
The 21-year-old college student, surnamed Zhou, was enjoying water sports with her three classmates on May 4 when the accident happened, today's Yangtze Evening News reported.
A witness said he heard a woman screaming around 3pm. She was brought to shore immediately and could hardly breathe due to her neck injury. A local hospital doctor, Ma Yun, said Zhou's heartbeat stopped for nearly 10 minutes and she received a surgery to repair her bronchia.
Zhou is still in the intensive care unit, Ma told the newspaper.
After the accident, all motor boats and water walking balls disappeared from the beach yesterday. Local officials said they would conduct a thorough safety check and punish unlicensed motor boat operators.
