Stronger supervision urged for cowpeas
THE Ministry of Agriculture yesterday urged strengthening supervision of cowpeas from Hainan after more pesticide-tainted cowpeas were discovered in three areas outside the island province.
Authorities discovered 3,596.9 kilograms of cowpeas were tainted with lethal pesticide at vegetable wholesale markets in Wuhan, Hubei Province, early this month. The contaminated cowpeas were from Hainan.
Authorities in Wuhan imposed a three-month ban on cowpeas starting February 7.
On Tuesday, officials in Hefei, Anhui Province, confiscated about 500 kilograms of cowpeas from Hainan that were tainted with lethal pesticides. The cowpeas were seized at a vegetable wholesale market.
An unspecified amount of tainted cowpeas from Hainan was also discovered in Guangzhou, in Hainan's neighboring Guangdong Province.
