Student bluffs angry crowd after a parking clash
A 19-year-old student in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province was detained yesterday for intentionally injuring a shop-owner and her 18-month-old girl in a parking dispute, People.com.cn reported yesterday.
College student Ma Wencong was taking his girlfriend to a massage parlor in a Mercedes-Benz on the night of September 18 when he started a quarrel with the woman, Liu Xiuying.
Police said a billboard ad Liu put in front of her shop stood in the way of Ma's intended parking space. Ma called a security guard to remove it but Liu put it back. Enraged, Ma got out of his car, went into Liu's shop, kicked her counter and threw things around. A calculator hit Liu's toddler in the head, leaving a 1cm cut in her temple.
Liu said Ma hit her daughter on purpose, but some witnesses said the girl was hit after the calculator bounced up from the floor.
Ma offered to pay Liu 300 yuan (US$47) as compensation but was rejected. As he tried to leave, some people blocked his car, but Ma ignored them and his car knocked down one man, causing him multiple fractures.
When police arrived, hundreds of people had gathered around the car. Ma was heard threatening that he was son of the city's mayor. This further stoked the anger of the crowd who refused to let police to take Ma away, fearing he would be set free immediately.
The crowd asked the police to check Ma's identity on the spot. The police vehicle was besieged for more than five hours until the officers agreed to let people take Ma's photos as evidence.
The photos were soon seen on microblog websites and stirred up a heated discussion over Ma's arrogant behavior. Ma denied saying he was son of the mayor and police found his father is actually the boss of a local electric appliances company.
