Student camps hit by swine flu

THIRTY-SIX students at a special training camp in Beijing were confirmed to have been infected with the H1N1 flu, health authorities said yesterday.

They were receiving treatment in Ditan Hospital in Beijing while others from the camp were quarantined for medical observation, Beijing municipal health authorities said.

The camp, which was held from July 11 to 20, included more than 80 primary school students from across China.

Meanwhile, Taiwan health authorities said yesterday that 106 out of 214 high school students attending a religion study camp in southern Kaosiung City have shown flu symptoms, with eight of them tested positive for the H1N1 influenza.

There is a high probability that other students showing flu symptoms could also be infected, the authorities said.

A handful of campers showed respiratory symptoms on July 16. Nearly half of the students had been suffering from severe coughing when they were inspected by health authorities on Wednesday.
