Student driver admits to slaying victim

A COLLEGE student who was detained for stabbing a woman to death after his car knocked her down in Shaanxi Province admitted he killed the victim because he found she was memorizing his car plate number.

The 21-year-old driver Yao Jiaxin, a junior student of Xi'an Conservatory of Music in Xi'an, the provincial capital, could get 10 years in prison up to death penalty for murder, a lawyer Zhao Xin told China Business View today.

Yao was driving his Chevrolet to meet his girlfriend when he knocked over the 26-year-old bike rider Zhang Meng on a road in Xi'an at 10:40pm on October 20, the newspaper said.

Zhang suffered a fractured left leg and minor head injuries, according to a police' report. However, when Yao jumped out of his car and saw Zhang was gazing at his car plate and at his face in an attempt to memorize the evidence, he allegedly stabbed her eight times in the chest, back and left arm with a knife until she lost consciousness in a pool of blood.

Yao then got into his car and fled the scene before he bumped another pedestrian half an hour later. He was blocked by a crowd of witnesses and was caught by police.
