Student falls, dies while watching solar eclipse

A 14-YEAR-OLD student died after hitting her head on the ground when stumbling on a bamboo stick during the solar eclipse yesterday in Hubei Province, the first such case ever reported in China during the astronomical phenomenon, Wuhan Evening Post reported today.

The girl surnamed Zhao went to a platform on the eighth floor of her residential building in Wuhan, capital of Hubei, in order to get a better view of the eclipse.

At around 8:30 am when the eclipse began she looked up into the sky and observed the sun carefully, the report said. She lost her footing when stepping on a bamboo stick and fell. Her forehead smacked into the ground, according to the report.

Zhao's face was covered in blood. Neighbors called her grandfather, a retired doctor, on the fifth floor, who rushed to the scene and found the girl unconscious. He carried out artificial respiration immediately and neighbors called an ambulance to send Zhao to Tongji Hospital.

Zhao died in hospital at around 10am.

She was staying with her grandparents at the time because her mother was in hospital for surgery and her father was at work, the report said.
