Student gets death sentence for killing professor

A BEIJING court yesterday sentenced a law school student to death with a two-year reprieve for cutting the throat of a professor who had sex with his ex-girlfriend.

Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday after the sentence that the 23-year-old Fu Chengli was given a two-year reprieve because he surrendered himself to police after committing the crime last October, according to the Tianjing-based Daily News.

Yet the former senior student of China University of Political Science and Law was never remorseful about killing his professor, Cheng Chunming. Fu's lawyer Zhang Bo recalled the only thing Fu said in the courtroom was to demand adding his own opinion into the verdict, which is that he should be executed immediately.

It is still unclear whether Fu would appeal.

Fu said he killed the 43-year-old married professor because he had had a year long affair with his ex-girlfriend, who was also Cheng's graduate student.

Fu's parents were relieved after hearing the verdict. Fu's sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment if he behaves well for the next two years.

Yet the prosecutors said the sentence was too lenient and Fu only called the police to get leniency. An unnamed prosecutor told the paper they might protest the sentence.
