Student gets three years for killing woman during suicide leap

A UNIVERSITY student was sentenced to three years in prison for accidentally killing a woman when he landed on her while trying to commit suicide by jumping from his 7th floor dormitory in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

The student was given a four-year reprieve after Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court heard his appeal, according to the report.

Deng Guowang, a student at Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, tried to commit suicide on September 3, 2007, after the industrial and commercial watchdog investigated him for forging company seals and documents, the report said.

He didn't look down before he jumped and landed on a younger student surnamed Yang, killing her, the report said. Deng was injured in the fall.

In the trial of first instance Deng agreed to give Yang's family 474,474 yuan (US$69,776) compensation, but appealed the 3 1/2 year sentence handed out by Panyu District People's Court.

Deng was also convicted for forging company seals and documents by the intermediate court.

Deng was responsible for organizing a small carnival for a trading company in Guangzhou University Town in August 2007, but he didn't have the proper documents to get approval to host the public activity.

As a result, Deng forged Guangzhou-based Feisheng Media Co's seals and documents, the report said.

When the industrial and commercial watchdog asked him to stop organizing the carnival and began to investigate him, Deng couldn't bear the pressure from the failure and wanted to die, the report said.
