Student in outdoor speech contest killed by falling tree

One student was killed and 28 injured by a falling tree when they were attending a school speech contest outdoors Thursday evening, the provincial government confirmed yesterday.
The tragedy took place about 9pm at the Jinggu No.2 Middle School, Yongping Town, in Yunnan's Pu'er City. Most of townsmen were from the Dai and Yi ethnic minority groups. The students were out on the campus sports field for a speech contest.
The whole Flamboyant tree is about two meters wide, it's reported. There's no powerful wind at time of the contest and one of the big tree's three major branches suddenly smashed towards the ground during the contest.
A junior high student was hit to death while 28 others suffered injuries such as bone fractures, brain concussion and bruises.
Twelve of the injured students were discharged by yesterday while the others remained in hospital for medical treatments.
The fallen branch was about 30 centimeters in diameter and more than 10 meters long, according to investigators. Ant nests were later discovered around the root of the tree.
The cause of the tree fall is still being probed.
