Student jumps to her death after punishment
A TEENAGE girl in central China's Henan Province jumped to her death after apparently being ordered by her teacher to do hundreds of sit-ups as punishment for not finishing her homework, Dahe Daily reported yesterday.
The 13-year-old girl, identified as Ling Ling of Luoyang Experimental Middle School, was found dead by her mother on the ground in front of her home at about 6pm last Friday.
The police later said that Ling Ling jumped from the roof at about 5:30pm.
Yu Jianwei, Ling Ling's father, told the newspaper that he received a call from the girl's teacher at about 4pm, saying that his daughter had not come to school. Yu's wife later found Ling Ling's coat on the platform of the roof and then found her body downstairs.
The father said that Ling Ling was forced to do hundreds of sit-ups whenever she failed to do her homework, suspecting that her death was linked to the teacher's punishment.
"My daughter used to tell us that she was ordered to do 100 sit-ups by her teacher for not finishing the homework," Yu said. "And, the penalty doubled every day for 'repeat offenders'."
A popular online post described one particular incident, without mentioning the date, where Ling Ling was ordered to do 800 sit-ups for not finishing her homework. The girl was also severely scolded and even beaten by the teacher after she tumbled while undergoing the punishing routine.
The Luoyang Bureau of Education launched an investigation into the incident over the weekend and found that on October 28 the mathematics teacher in Ling Ling's class had forced students to do sit-ups for playing truant with their homework.
"It's already a punishment that violates educational rules," Han Jingquan, vice director of the education bureau said.
